Why is a safety called a safety?

I've seen several examples of a "safety" and I'm still not exactly sure what it is...
The best description I've ever heard is, "if your team suddenly scores two points and you don't know why, most likely it was a safety..."
Of course, that's good enough for me, but what if I'm tested on this stuff one day?! What if there is a football pop quiz and I'm one question away from passing and the only question left is "What is a safety?"

What happens when my boyfriend is out of the room and two points are scored, and upon re-entering the room he says "What happened? Was it a safety?"...
"um... sure... they look safe to me...."
Would he consider that kind of answer cute, or mildly retarded?

I just googled about "safety" and the exact question I input was the title of your blog entry!

So I found the answer on Wiki, if that helps!
